Automated dispensing cabinets connected to the computerised prescription were progressively implemented at the HUG [actually ~ 70]. The benefits of logistic efficiency and traceability have been demonstrated in ROI evaluations. Few studies are available on the impact of automated dispensing cabinets on dispensing errors and patient safety. Join this session to know more about the results of the largest study ever conducted including the observation of 8 wards with ADCs and 8 wards without ADCs. During this session, Prof. Pascal Bonnabry will demonstrate in which context the study was performed at HUG and highlight the main observations on efficiency and safety.

Replay: Smart ICU - a pathway towards the hospital of the future

Dr Ferrer will share his background as Head of ICU in Vall d’Hebron, one of the leading hospitals in Spain, to inspire and guide attendees on the pathways and steps taken to achieve his vision of a Smart ICU. The main goal of this project is to improve safety and efficiency in the ICU and, with the ambition of seamless integration of all ICUs within nearby hospitals in the region, to serve more than 7.5 million people. Replay: The National Cancer Information System (Ireland) - the provision of a national patient-centred, longitudinal, and accessible cancer care record

Deep dive into a country-wide connected approach to Cancer Care. Learn about expected outcomes, benefits, and challenges of implementing a single source of information across 25 hospitals in the Republic of Ireland. Back in 2013, in response to requirements identified by Medical Oncology Consultants and other healthcare professionals delivering cancer care services, a steering group was established to develop a framework for the procurement and implementation of a National Cancer Information System (NCIS) for the optimal and safe delivery of systemic cancer treatment, including e-prescribing and e-administration of chemotherapy in publicly funded hospitals. The NCIS will span 25 public hospitals in a single database and had its first go-live in 2019. It aims to provide a single access to patients’ cancer care, providing support for the recording of multi-disciplinary team meetings, chemotherapy prescribing, compounding and electronic administration and other patient documentation. BD Cato™ plays a key role in this new infrastructure, feeding information to the central repository about the end-to-end medication management process; prescribing-compounding-administration.

Abdulgader is an accomplished, goal-oriented and results-driven senior executive with experience identifying initiatives and supporting action-driven plans to ensure financial growth within the healthcare industry. Abdulgar is focused on building national strategies with demonstrated experience in planning, developing, and implementing cutting-edge data and artificial intelligence solutions to address healthcare business needs and opportunities.

Currently, Abdulgader is the health sector lead and AI consultant at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI). He has more than 15 years of extensive knowledge and experience in healthcare IT and pharmacy informatics. He holds a master’s degree in health informatics (MHI) from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada in addition to his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical science from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Assistant Director of the pharmacy department at Gregorio Marañon Hospital, a 1400-bed acute- and tertiary-care teaching institution in Madrid. Anna also serves as assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy of Complutense University, San Pablo CEU and Alcalá de Henares University. As part of the pharmacy steering committee, she has been highly involved in the transformation of this pharmacy to a finest and safe institution (CPOE since 2003, Pyxis Profiled since 2003, Smart pumps since 2010) with a competitive position in the Spanish Public Health System, giving efficient, committed, sustainable and sensitive services catering to the needs of clients and patients.

In the research field, since 2009 Ana has been in charge of The Innovation Office at the Pharmacy Department where she coordinates the implementation of new technology, research plans and innovation projects. This centre is focused on six main research areas: Quality, Clinical Services and Pharmacotherapy Management, Drug Utilization Innovation and Safety, Development and Professional Competence, Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomicsm, and Genomics Biomedicine and Nanomedicine. Ana has presented at local, state, national, European and international meetings and has published several papers in high-impact factor journals about management, automation and patient safety. Since 2005, she has been the Associate Editor in the EJHP responsible for overseeing the peer review process for safety, IT and management and making recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief.

She has received several awards among which are worth mentioning: The Royal National Academy of Pharmacy Award (2004), Best European Pharmacist by Cardinal Health (2005), 1st Award of Innovation given by Rey Juan Carlos University (2011), Best Pharmacy Initiatives by Correo Farmacéutico (2012) and the Pharmacy Department where she works received the Award of Excellence of Public Pharmacy Services by The Madrid Council (2012).

Christian Dierks

Christian Dierks, MD, JD, has been solving legal challenges at the intersection of medicine, law and information technology since 1990. He is a specialised lawyer for social and medical law, general practitioner and professor for health services research at Charité Berlin. Christian was president of the German Society for Medical Law (2000 – 2008) and is a member of the Legal Committee of the Federal Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (BPI), member of the Legal Working Group of the European Confederation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs (EUCOPE), member of the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics, International Society of Telemedicine & eHealth, the International Bar Association and numerous other national and international committees and working groups. He has published over 100 books, book contributions and essays. Prior to co-founding Dierks+Company, he was a founding partner of Dierks + Bohle. Under the leadership of Christian Dierks, Dierks + Bohle became one of Germany’s leading law firms in healthcare and life sciences. In 2017, it employed more than 60 employees at the locations Berlin, Dusseldorf and Brussels, including specialists in medical law, hospital law and pharmacy law. Christian Dierks defines his role as a lawyer in society beyond traditional understanding in order to perform tasks successfully, efficiently and creatively. According to him, lawyers are not only organs of justice, and as such, committed to the interests of their clients and to the truth, they must also be thought leaders, designers and pioneers.

Davide Visentin is Vice President and General Manager for Medication Management Solutions for the EMEA region at BD.

He was born in Italy and studied Computer Science from 1987 to 1994 at the University of Milan. During his career, Davide has developed a strong vision of how to drive global business in the medical device industry, both in the disposable and capital equipment sectors. Since 1994, he has held different positions at leading medical device industry providers such as Johnson & Johnson, Stryker and BD. His experience includes general management, strategic planning and R&D business development initiatives across regions. In his current role, Davide is responsible for both the infusion solutions business and hospital dispensing automation solutions across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Dennis Black

Dennis Black has over 30 years of experience in the medical device industry and has worked in a variety of roles and functions. He joined BD in 1998 and currently works within the Global Regulatory team as the UDI Program Director. Dennis is currently focused on implementing Unique Device Identification (UDI) regulations globally. This responsibility includes ensuring that the BD product identification strategy meets healthcare provider needs and internal supply chain requirements while complying with all applicable regulations. Dennis presently serves on the GS1 Healthcare Global Leadership Team; the GS1 US Executive Leadership Committee; and the Strategic MarketPlace Initiatives (SMI) Board of Directors, where he is also Treasurer. He also collaborates with various industry work groups within AdvaMed, MedTech Europe, Global Healthcare Exchange (GHX), and the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) to solve multiple healthcare challenges.

Etienne COUSEIN

Dr Etienne Cousein is currently Director of Pharmacy at the University Hospital of Valenciennes, France. Since 2007, he has been an active contributor to the development of the hospital across the region, playing the key role for the organisational change and modernisation of the overall hospital pharmacy. He has been successfully integrated automation and IT as well as conducted significant change management across the pharmacy team. Since 2015, he has integrated the hospital directory board, helping him bring his vision of the hospital of the future to life. He contributes to recognised publications.

Grant Carroll

Pharmacist @ National Cancer Control Programme

Grant Carroll obtained his undergraduate degree in New Zealand and completed his initial hospital experience there before moving to Ireland in 2006. He went on to specialise in oncology and haematology, both in compounding and as a clinical pharmacist. After working on the implementation of an electronic prescribing solution in a large teaching hospital in Dublin, Mr Carroll moved to the National Cancer Control Programme to begin work on the NCIS solution.

Irene Krämer

Professor @ Universitätsmedizin Mainz

Since 2006, Prof. Dr Irene Krämer, in addition to her position as pharmacy director, has been an adjunct professor of clinical pharmacy at the Institute of Pharmacy and Biochemistry in Mainz, Germany.

Her scientific work focuses on central cytostatic drug preparation, the oncological patient, clinical pharmaceutical care of selected patient collectives, the stability of ready-to-use parenterals, protein drugs and biosimilars. The results of her scientific work can be found in more than 100 publications and book chapters. In 2016, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her services to clinical pharmacy.

Jaime Poquet Hornet

Head of Pharmacy Department @ Hospital of Denia- Marina Salud

Dr Jaime Poquet Jornet is currently the Director of Pharmacy and Director of Teaching, Training and Research of the Department of Health of Dénia. Prior to this, Dr Poquet was Head of the Hospital Pharmacy Service at the Asepyo Hospital in Sant Cugat del Valles for 11 years. He holds a Bachelor in Pharmacy from the University of Valencia and a Doctorate in Pharmacy, with a specialisation in Hospital Pharmacy. He has published over 70 articles and has participated in 100 case studies which have been included in both national and international journals and congresses. As a member of the scientific committee of Congresses for Pharmacy, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacy since 2008. Thanks to Dr Poquet’s efforts on the leadership team at the Department of Health of Dénia, the Hospital of Dénia became the first European recipient of the HIMMS Davies Award.

Julia Asplin is the Pharmacy Logistics Lead and Purchasing Team Manager at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Specialising in Pharmacy procurement and distribution services within NHS Hospital Pharmacy, she is currently working as the project lead for the FMD and BD Pyxis™ Inventory Connect implementation. Julia has worked for NHS Trusts across London and the East of England and is the Chairperson for the East of England region Pharmacy Purchasing Consortia.

Khalid Dayem

Senior Manager, Automation and Informatics @ Cleveland Clinic Abu dhabi

Khalid Abdel Dayem is currently working as a Senior Manager, Pharmacy Informatics and Automation, at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD). He is one of the founding members of the department of Pharmacy at CCAD and joined the team in 2012. Khalid is a graduate of the University of Jordan college of Pharmacy and obtained his Masters of Quality Management degree from the University of Wollongong. He served as a Senior Cerner application specialist at Al Rahba hospital for 8 years. He currently holds four EPIC certifications. Khalid was instrumental in setting up medication journey and technology workflows throughout the hospital that enabled Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi to obtain HIMSS Stage 7 in 2016. He advises executive leadership on long-term strategic technology initiatives and serves as a pharmacy liaison both within and outside the organisation. He has presented at several local and regional conferences on topics of integrated technologies and the important role pharmacists play.

Minne Jorritsma

Global Market Development Manager Pouch Packaging @ BD

Minne Jorritsma is an International Business Leader for Pouch Packaging Solutions and Automated Dose dispensing at BD. For more than 20 years he has been supporting hospitals, wholesalers, care organisations and retail pharmacies to develop automated and innovative designs for medication management solutions. In 1991, he started his career as Technical Service Manager, working with one of the leading pouch packaging companies. From there, he progressed to strategic consulting and workflow design implementation across the globe. Over the last 10 years, Minne has had the chance to partner with hospital groups and distribution centres to set up best-in-class workflows including pouch packaging, IT infrastructure and other automation equipment. He lives in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Pascal Bonnabry

Head of pharmacy @ Geneva University Hospitals

Prof. Bonnabry has been the Head of Pharmacy at the Geneva University Hospital since 2000. He has been teaching pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Geneva and the University of Lausanne since 2007. In addition, he is a member of the Swiss Society of Public Health Administration and Hospital Pharmacists (GSASA), of which he presided from 2011 to 2013. He is the author of more than 85 publications in peer-reviewed journals and about 55 education publications in non-peer-reviewed journals. Besides global pharmacy, his main research interests are focused on risk management and the human factor and evaluation of information technology.

Pascal Verdonck

Pascal Verdonck was born in 1963 in Gent, Belgium. He graduated with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1986 from Ghent University and obtained a Master of Business Administration (1989), a Master of Science Biomedical Engineering (1993) and a PhD (1993). Since 1987, he has multiplied experiences in Engineering, Sciences and Medicine. His scientific research has spanned numerous fields of biomedical engineering sciences: experimental and numerical modeling of the cardiovascular system, haemodynamics and transport phenomena in extracorporeal circulation and artificial organs, computational bio design and medical device technology. He has led private and public hospital groups for 20 years. He is an active advisor for the MedTech Start & Scale-up Ecosystem and is now leading university courses on “leadership in healthcare” and “engineering project in hospitals” at Ghent University in Belgium.

Ricard Ferrer

Head of ICU @ Vall d´Hebron Hospital, Spain

Dr Ricard Ferrer is Head of the Intensive Care Department at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. He graduated in 1992 from the University of Barcelona Medical School and pursued his specialisation in Intensive Care from 1994 to 1998 and his PhD title in 2010 from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. He has published a number of original articles and review articles in peer reviewed journals in the field of sepsis and severe infection and has contributed to the publication of book chapters on these topics (H-index Google Scholar 2120= 35). Prof. Ferrer holds several positions at numerous intensive care societies: He is president of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care (SEMICYUC) and a member of the steering committee of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. In the ESICM, he is Chairman of the Systemic Inflammation and Sepsis section, organiser of the NEXT fellowship in Infectious Diseases in Barcelona and a council member.

Rudy Maertens is CEO at AZ Alma VZW hospital in Leuven, Belgium. He studied Nursing, Hospital Administration, as well as healthcare management and ITC for healthcare. For 17 years, he has been contributing to the development of the hospital from a vision and integrated workflow perspective and always keeps the well-being of staff and patients in mind. He is currently positioning Automation, IT transformation and Data Analytics as the foundation for hospital transformation.

Serdar Kaya currently leads the Materials Management and Inventory Control Department at American Hospital, a leading hospital in Turkey. He is an experienced materials manager with demonstrated experience in the hospital and healthcare industry.
